How safety switches work?

When a person comes into direct contact with electricity, electricity is directed through their body to earth. This causes a loss in the amount of electricity in the electrical circuit (the path for the flow of electricity). A safety switch detects very small losses of electricity and immediately switches the power off.

A safety switch can switch off electricity in a circuit in as little as 0.3 seconds.

Fuses and circuit breakers protect against short circuits and current overloads, but only safety switches protect people from electric shock.

Why do I need a safety switch?

Safety switches provide protection against injuries caused by electricity. Many of the fatalities caused by electricity could be prevented by installing a safety switch. Many older homes may not be protected by safety switches.

In 1991 it became mandatory in South Australia to have safety switches installed in all new domestic premises and in buildings where electrical circuits are altered or added. Safety switches are also required for power outlets supplying caravans or similar accommodation in caravan parks.

Q: Is it important to test a safety switch?

This is crucially important. If you do not test your safety switches regularly they could become slow to operate, or even lock up. Safety switches need to be kept in peak condition as they operate in a split second preventing electrocution.

Q: How often should I test them?

While we recommend that you test your safety switches every six months, some models need testing monthly.

Q: How do I test them?

Step 1 is to make sure that there are no household appliances in use (no need to unplug the fridge). Go to your switchboard and locate your safety switch/switches. Press the “test” or “T” button – your safety switch should immediately trip to the “off” position. Return the safety switch to the on position, and repeat for all of your safety switches. If your safety switch does not trip to the “off” position when you press the test button it is imperative to call Luke Electrical so that the safety switch can be replaced.

Q: I am a bit nervous about touching the switchboard.

There are many people who are not comfortable with this kind of task and at Luke Electrical we are always happy to help. While we’re on site checking your safety switches we can also do a complete switchboard safety check for total peace of mind.
