Q: So its the end of daylight saving and I hear a lot of discussion about smoke alarms.

When we put our clocks back an hour at the end of daylight savings it is the perfect reminder to check and test your smoke alarms. The battery in your smoke alarm should be changed every 12 months.

Q: I have 240V hard wired smoke alarms - should I test them?

Absolutely – the 240V hard wired smoke alarms all have a 9V battery in them in case of power failure. These need to be regularly tested in accordance with the manucturer’s recommendations.

Q: Do I legally have to have smoke alarms?

Yes you do! And there are penalties for any home owner who does not have a smoke detector fitted.  If your house was built before 1995, a battery operated smoke alarm is OK, if your house was built after 1994 your smoke alarms must be hard wired.

Q: My alarms are quite old now - are they still OK?

Manufacturers of smoke alarms suggest that the alarms should be changed every 10 years. After that time smoke alarms may malfunction and their efficiency may be effected by accumulated dust, insects, airborne contaminants and corrosion of electrical circuitry. For the past 7-8 years manufacturers have labelled all of their smoke alarms with an expiry date.  If your alarms do not have an expiry date, chances are they need replacing. Nothing is more important than your families safety, so getting smoke alarms installed in Adelaide is a very important step to ensuring that you are alerted if there is a fire in the house.
